10 Nicknames for Cards in Poker: Jacks

The knave, the scoundrel, the dog; why does no one like the lowest picture card (unless you get three or four of them together). As early as the mid-16th century the card was known in English decks as the Knave (meaning a male servant of royalty). It became Jack in 1864, when Samuel Hart, an English card maker, published a deck using J instead of Kn for the lowest court card. The French decks are where most of the nicknames come from, and if you play poker at a pavement café on the Champs Elysees, you will certainly hear these Jacks referred to by their French Nicknames. Mais oui! Alors mes enfants, here we look at the nicknames given to the Jack cards, starting with the generic ones for Jacks of any suit:

1. Fishhook

No prizes for this one! It is simply that the J resembles a standard fish hook!

2. One-Eyed Jack

The name given to either or both of the two jacks who are presented in profile (see hand above) the Jack of Spades and the Jack of Hearts. However it is only in the latest evolution of these cards (20th century) that these two jacks are in profile. See the 17th century French cards below, and note that only the Jack of Diamonds is in profile!

3. Bower

This is from the German word Bauer, meaning farmer, or jack. It stems from the card game Euchre, a game popular in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and in the western parts of England. It derives from a 19th-century Alsatian game called juckerspiel from the fact that its two top trumps are Jucker, meaning “jack.” But they were also referred to as Bauers- Bowers.

Jack of Spades

4. Olgier the Dane

Ogier (or Holger) the Dane is an important character in the French medieval epic poems known as chansons de geste, which relate tales of heroic deeds. The character of Ogier is referred to in the chansons as the son of the Danish ruler Gaufrey (Godfrey). In Danish folk songs, such as the Song of Roland, Ogier is also celebrated as a national hero. Stories about Ogier also appear in Icelandic, Castilian, Catalonian, and Italian literature.

Jack of Diamonds

5. Hector

Called “Hector”, not after the Trojan hero slain by Achilles, but Sir Hector de Maris (or Ector de Maris), a Knight of the Round Table in Arthurian legend. He is the younger half-brother of Lancelot.

6. Roland of France

From the French epic poem, Song of Roland, which was about the Battle of Roncesvalles in 778, which brought France out of the Dark Ages, united under Charlemagne the Great.

Jack of Hearts

7. La Hire

The warrior card: refers to Étienne “La Hire” de Vignolles, companion in arms of Joan of Arc. His coat of arms is shown on the left. was a French military commander during the Hundred Years’ War. His name remains a byword for a choleric disposition (that’s bad-tempered to you and I!)

Jack of Clubs

8. Lancelot

Sir Lancelot was one of King Arthur’s most trusted knights of the Round Table, at least until he was discovered having a dalliance with Queen Guinevere. He should have kept his sword in his scabbard!

9. Judas Maccabeus

Fame for leading the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire (167–160 BC) and is acclaimed as one of the greatest warriors in Jewish history alongside Joshua, Gideon and David.

And finally we finish with a generic name for the Jack:

10. Jackal

If a player is called a Jackal in Poker, it means they are crazy and unpredictable. Jackal also means anyone who does dirty work for another; one who meanly serves the purpose of another. As the lowest of the picture cards, he’s the step ‘n fetch it of the Court.

10 Nicknames for Queen Cards

There are a number of generic names for a Queen card: Cowgirl, Dame, Lady, Bitch, Girl, Whore, Hen, Painted Lady and Mop-Squeezer. Clearly there were some chauvinistic forces at play when these names were coined!  Here are nicknames for the individual queen cards.

Queen Of Spades

1. Bedpost Queen

So named because of the sceptre she holds in the crook of her arm- it looks as bit like a bedpost!

2. Athena, Pallas Athenae

The queen of spades represents Athena, the Greek goddess of war. She’s the only armed queen in the deck… the sceptre is not only a symbol of power, it was also a medieval weapon, similar to a mace.

3. Black Maria

A variant of the trick-taking card game Hearts, or Reverse, where you have to try to avoid a trick containing the Queen of Spades. It is also a colloquial name for secure police vans with separate locked cubicles, used for the transportation of prisoners. The name is said to have come from a large and powerful black lodging-house keeper named Maria Lee, who helped constables of Boston, Massachusetts in the 1830s when they needed to escort drunks to the cells. It was popular in Britain in the 1950s-70s, but has fallen out of use.

4. Calamity Jane

Named for the markswoman of the Old West (Martha Jane Canary,

who is buried in Deadwood, SD, in 1903, next to Wild Bill Hickock), whose name some say was associated with prophecies of doom.

5. Fanny Kaplan

The Jewish-born political revolutionary Fanny Kaplan was shot at the age of 28 for an attempted assassination of Vladimir Lenin. She approached the Leader near a Moscow factory and fired three shots at him. One passed through Lenin’s coat, the other two hit him in the left shoulder and jaw. Lenin survived, but his health never fully recovered from the attack and it is believed the shooting contributed to the strokes that incapacitated and later killed him. She was executed two days later. Fanny’s implication in the assassination attempt has been doubted in recent years, but she continues to be considered a woman of mystery and death- hence the name.

Queen of Clubs

6. Argine

Anagram of Regina, latin for “queen”

 Queen of Hearts

7.  Judith

From the 1650s when French cards portrayed the Queen of Hearts as Judith from the Bible. This depiction of Judith was to convey the attribute of courage. In the Bible Judith killed and beheaded the Assyrian General Holofernes (painting of this by Caravaggio)

8. Helen of Troy

In Greek mythology, Helen of Troy (in Greek, Ἑλένη, Helénē), also known as Helen of Sparta, was the daughter of Zeus and Leda. Her abduction by Paris brought about the Trojan War.

9. Di

The Queen of Hearts has been adopted as a nickname for some particularly beloved royals. Princess Diana of Wales (1961-1997) once remarked that she would “like to be known as the queen of people’s hearts,” and was thereafter referred to as the Queen of Hearts in many newspapers’ headlines. When she died in a tragic car accident, there was a great outpouring of national mourning in the UK and beyond.

Queen of Diamonds

10. Rachel

As for the queen of Diamonds, no special personality seems to have been favoured in the 14th and 15th centuries, except in France, where the queen was labeled Penthisilea (the queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology).  But in the 16th century, one heroine became almost universally adopted; Rachel, Jacob’s love in the romantic Bible story after he saw het at a well while he tended sheep.  Since Rachel was, arguably, mean and grasping, her adoption as queen of the “money” suit, diamonds, seems reasonable enough –as does the motto that the French often printed on her card: Vivent les bons enfants qui jouent souvent (long live the good folk who play often). If you burn the Queen of Diamonds it’s said that you are showing that you are so wealthy (or lucky at cards) that you are flying in the face of poverty!

What Are Freerolls ?

If you’re wondering what is a Freeroll, then here’s the answer.

A “freeroll” is a free poker tournament that doesn’t have an entry fee but pays the winner (or winners) in real money ,or at least in a “real-money value” prize like a tournament-entry ticket or some poker merchandise.

Free poker tournaments come in all shapes and sizes, but typically offer a prize pool of a few hundred dollars. At any size, they’re by far the best way to build your bankroll from scratch and improve your game without risking any of your own money. So if you want to build an online poker bankroll with zero risk, then Freerolls are the answer.

Famous Poker Events Part 1

Date: 1955
Place: Las Vegas
Card: Five Card Stud
Protagonists: Nick the Greek Dandalos vs The Grand Old Man Johnny Moss

It is claimed that the greatest poker hand ever played took place in Las Vegas in 1955. The hand was decided by a jack of diamonds, (the same final card that later appeared in the poker movie, “The Cincinnati Kid”). However, while that movie depicted a poker hand with a straight flush beating a full house, the greatest poker hand ever played was won with….a simple pair. Ok, let’s meet the principal players:
The Players

Nick Dandalos

Nicholas Andreas “Nick the Greek” Dandolos (April 27, 1883 – December 25, 1966) was born in Crete. When he was 18 years old his grandfather sent him to the U.S.A. with an allowance of $150 per week. Although Dandolos settled down in Chicago he eventually moved to Montreal where he began gambling on horse races.
Dandolos was known throughout his life for winning and losing large sums of money. After winning over $500,000 on horse racing, he moved back to Chicago where he lost it all on card and dice games. He quickly became a master of these games, however, and became a prime attraction at casinos when he would play in them.
He played Johnny Moss in 1949 in a marathon set of sessions. At the end of this five month poker marathon, down an estimated $2-4 million dollars, Dandolos uttered what has become one of the most famous poker quotes ever: “Mr. Moss, I have to let you go.” People claim fatigue was a major factor for Dandolos’ loss as he was 24 years older than Moss!
From January 1955 to May 1955, Dandolos played a two-person “heads up” poker match against Johnny Moss where the two played virtually every variation of the game that existed at the time. The game, set up as a tourist attraction, is widely credited as being the inspiration for the modern day World Series of Poker. This is the series of games from which the one described below is drawn.
Near the end of his life Dandolos was near broke and playing $5 limit Draw poker games in Gardena, California. When asked by a fellow player how he could once play for millions and now be playing for such small stakes, Dandolos supposedly replied “Hey, it’s action, isn’t it?” He died on Christmas Day in 1966 and was a charter inductee of the Poker Hall of Fame in 1979.
Johnny Moss

As a young boy growing up in Odessa, Texas, Moss learnt his craft from “a gang of cheaters” in the backrooms of the South during the dark days of the Great Depression. These flamboyant characters introduced him to the less savoury side of card gambling like dealing from the bottom of the deck and using marked cards in high stakes games. They also showed him how to look after himself in the rough and often dangerous world of illegal gambling. “The Grand Old Man” of poker Jonny Moss, was quite literally the living embodiment of poker culture and its progression throughout the 20th Century. Having played poker almost his entire life, Moss experienced, and was a major force behind, poker’s evolution from the illegal gambling halls of the early 1900s through to the present day, where it sits comfortably in the main stream of popular culture.
As he entered his teens, Moss found employment keeping games clean in a local card saloon. It was here that Moss started to refine the legendary poker skills that would serve him so well throughout his life. For example, during this time Moss honed his extraordinary ability to detect the pulse of apprehension in the veins of an opponent’s neck!
In today’s sanitised world it is almost impossible to believe some of the tales told of Johnny Moss as he journeyed through the underworld card rooms of the USA. One such tale he retold in his own words:
“One night I’m playing in some small town – I don’t remember where, maybe in Oklahoma – and I see they got the room set up as a peep joint. So I pull my gun – always carried a gun back in those days – and said ‘Now fellas, do I have to go and shoot a bullet in the ceiling? Or you going to send your boy down without any harm?’ Hell, they thought I was bluffing; ended up shooting the guy in the ass”.

Moss’s achievements at the poker table are endless and almost unparalleled in the world of card gambling. They include winning the World Series Of Poker three times.

The Game
So here we have the true story that in 1955, what was then the biggest poker pot in the history of the game, was won by:

The poker game was five-card stud, and the principals were Nick the Greek Dandalos and The Grand Old Man Johnny Moss. The Greek had been to Las Vegas before, he had gambled in Las Vegas and shot craps with Arnold Rothstein in New York and played dice with Dutch Schultz in Chicago and blackjack with the automaker Citroen in Cannes, and he had also broken the bank in Monte Carlo at the game of roulette. But when Nick the Greek came to Las Vegas in 1955 he wanted to play poker, and so he issued the challenge that he would play against any man in no limit poker until one of them went bust.
A man called Benny Binion had recently opened a sawdust joint on Fremont Street called Binion’s Horseshoe casino, and he said he would spread that game on condition that it be held in full view of the public. Nick Dandalos agreed, and then Benny Binion put in a call. He phoned his boyhood friend Johnny Moss, who had been up three days in a row playing poker in Odessa, Texas. Johnny Moss put down the phone and drove the two days straight to Las Vegas, walked into Binion’s Horseshoe casino and sat down to play poker with Nick the Greek.
They hadn’t been playing for more than four days straight when this hand developed, and it started innocently enough. Johnny Moss received two nines wired, back-to-back, and Nick the Greek showed a seven. Five card stud is dealt one card down and one up to start, with the last three cards dealt face up, one by one. Four betting rounds, and at this first opportunity Johnny Moss bet on his nines and was called by Nick the Greek. Johnny Moss drew an eight and the Greek drew a deuce. Again Moss bet and was called by the Greek. On the fourth card, Johnny drew a three, and the Greek caught a four. Moss’ two nines beat any hand the Greek could have had and he made a large bet, called again by Nick the Greek.
Moss didn’t help with a deuce at the last, but Nick the Greek caught a black jack. The Greek bet and Moss moved in on him, all his chips. Nick the Greek looked at Johnny Moss and said, “Mr. Moss, I do believe I have a jack under here.” Johnny Moss replied, cool as can be, “Greek, if you got a jack you’re liable to win yourself one hell of a pot.” And Nick the Greek flipped over the jack of diamonds and took down a poker pot that had over one million dollars in it. Nick Dandalos paid all that money to hit a jack on the last card!
What makes this the greatest hand in the history of poker? It was two great men, one astounding bad beat, and the largest poker pot ever built at that time. And it provides the ultimate proof that though poker has luck in its individual moments, it truly is a game for the long run. Much more tense and exciting than the Cincinatti Kid!

10 Nicknames for Ace Cards

1.

Blackberry

Simply because of its resemblance to the fruit- and nothing to do with the ubiquitous, allegedly “must-have” mobile handset of those who still have jobs in City Trading.

2.

Puppy Foot

Originated in America in the early 1900’s, based on the resemblance of the club single image to the underside or footprint of a small dog. As you can see from this- there’s something wrong with the number of claws on the paw!

3.

The Death Card

Also known as the Spadille, it is generally considered to be the highest value card in the deck. An unpleasant practice grew up in 1967 during the Vietnam Way, when some US soldiers were filmed putting the Ace of Spades in the mouths of killed Vietcong  NVA/NLFsoldiers. There was no evidence that this practice caused fear and loathing in the Vietnamese, although it was reputed to have raised the morale of US soldiers. Some US soldiers tucked the card into the webbing of their helmets, as a macho symbol and as an anti-peace movement gesture.

More recently, in 2003 a deck of most-wanted Iraqi playing cards issued to US soldiers during Operation Iraqi Freedom, each card had the picture of a wanted Iraqi official on it. Saddam Hussein got the nickname “Ace of Spades” as his was the face which adorned that card.

4.

The Tax Card

The spade design arose from England in the 1600s, when James I (Originally King of Scotland, and successor to Queen Elizabeth I who left no heir) and later Queen Anne, imposed laws requiring the Ace of Spades to bear an insignia of the printing house. A stamp duty (tax) was extended to playing cards in 1711 by Queen Anne and lasted until 1960.

European governments also placed heavy taxes on packs of cards. A deck could not be sold unless it had an official tax stamp, which showed that the duty had already been paid. Playing card manufacturers placed the tax stamp onto the ace of spades, the highest available card in a deck.

Even after the tax stamps were no longer used, the manufacturers continued to design the ace of spades larger and different from the other cards because players had become use to the large size of the highest ranking card. Besides the poker cards, the ace of spades are the most selected playing cards of collectors. The tradition has carried on until today and the ace of spades usually has a different design from the rest of the deck along with the name of the manufacturer.

5.

Pig’s Eye

This was originally an expression the card game Bridge for the Ace of Diamonds. Most people to think it’s just a reference to the fact that pigs have notoriously small eyes for the size of their heads!

6.

The Death Card

I hear you say “What?? Surely we’ve already had that- the Ace of Spades!”. But if you were in the Cosa Nostra you’d know that the Ace of Diamonds was the Mafia’s calling card for death. How come?

By 1930 an out-and-out war had erupted between the most powerful Mafia chieftains: Masseria and Maranzano, representing Sicilians from eastern and western regions of Sicily, respectively. Under Masseria was his underboss, Lucky Luciano, as well as other well-known gansters; Vito Genovese, Frank Costello, Joe Adonis, Albert Anastasia, Carlo Gambino and Willie Moretti. With Maranzano were Joe Profaci, and Joseph Bonnano. Luciano reached a secret agreement with Maranzano to end the war by killing Masseria.

Luciano invited his boss Masseria (see photo)  to share a bounteous and succulent afternoon meal at a Coney Island restaurant. Masseria regarded Luciano like a son so he didn’t bother to bring his bodyguards. After the meal they began playing cards. At one point Luciano made a trip to the washroom. Several gunmen— entered the restaurant and blasted the life out of Masseria. When Luciano returned, he found Masseria clutching an Ace of Diamonds; which thereafter became a Mafia symbol of death).

7.

American Airlines

Two aces- AA= American Airlines.

8.

Exxon Valdez

The big 1989 oil spill. Since if you go swimming in it you get a lot of black in your eyes! This is especially true if the person throwing down the big Exxon Valdez is semi drunk and playing erratically as the captain was charged with being impaired at the time of the accident! Also works with Ace and King in these two suits.

9.

Joe Louis

Because if you go into the ring with Joe Louis you will come out with two black eyes!

10.

Visine

Visine is a brand of eye drops produced by Johnson & Johnson who acquired Visine, along with Pfizer’s entire consumer healthcare portfolio, in December 2006. The advert for Visine says “Gets the red out”.

10 Nicknames for King Cards

For a period, starting in the 15th century, French playing-card manufacturers assigned names to each of the court cards taken from history or mythology.  These were adopted in England during the 17th century. These names became less common in the 19th century. These first four are the French names for the King cards, that are still used (in Europe in particular). Read the rest of this entry »

WSOP FEATURED POKER PLAYER FROM THE UK!

It’s not often that a Brit gets top accolades in poker, but Darren Woods tasted victory in the $2.5k Limit Hold’em Six-Max Tournament last year, gaining $213k and the prestigious WSOP bracelet. “It’s what every poker player wants to win,” said Woods. “The money is great as well but winning the bracelet is something else entirely.”

“I think British players are just the best players,” said Woods. “That’s slightly patriotic but what else can I say. We expect to pull a few more bracelets before this is done.”

Here are some facts about the man!

1- Darren is 26 and started playing 6 years ago, spending 3$ on his first game, and reading the rules of Texas Hold em as he was playing!

2- Darren was working at a firm of accountants, but says that that fiscal knowledge was of no help to him in playing Poker!

3- He rose to become a pro during a time where Americans dominated the poker sites. He would fold 98% of hands, simply raising very big, or shoving all in with a really good hand, and hoping for a call. He played 10 or more tables at once, at a $10 max buy in, and the beauty of this system was that people simply don’t care much about $10 and the calls were often very weak, and when multi-tabling to such an extent for many hours at end, he soon found himself earning a decent living from poker.

4-Woods hails from Grimsby, a fishing port on the North East coast of England at the mouth of the River Humber. According to legend, Grimsby was first founded by Grim, a Danish fisherman. ‘By’ means ‘village’ in Old Norse.

5- Darren gave up his trainee Accountant job after 6 months but found that as the stakes increased, the loose call became less. He had to learn the game over, and get into the psychology of gambling, and little by little improve his game at each increase in level of betting.

6- In Summer 2011, Woods outlasted 354 players and a tough final table that included femme fatale Kim Nguyen to win his first WSOP bracelet and $213k.

7- Woods was the third player from the U.K. to win a bracelet at WSOP 2011, joining Jake Cody and Matt Perrins.

8- Woods could not say why Brits had done so well this WSOP:“I think British players are just the best players,” said Woods. “That’s slightly patriotic but what else can I say. We expect to pull a few more bracelets before this is done.”

9- Woods had the tremendous fortune of watching close friend Tyler Bonkowski win a WSOP bracelet just days before he won his own. It was an inspirational performance that boosted his own, according to Woods. “It was amazing to go watch him at the final table, I thought, ‘Ok, if he can do it, I can do it.’”

10- Although Woods said: “I came here to win a bracelet. Now my goal is to win two.” His tally remained at one.
